Another red flag:

Which is to say, once Amazon has it, they have the right to do anything they want with it, including possibly using it in anthologies or selling it other languages, etc, without paying the author anything else for it, ever. Again, an excellent deal for Amazon; a less than excellent deal for the actual writer.

Coca-Cola won’t say how it makes its best-selling Simply Orange orange juice, but one thing is for sure: It’s not so simple. A new investigation by Bloomberg Businessweek shows that the Coke-owned orange juice brand that’s billed as less processed version of Tropicana is in fact a hyper-engineered and dauntingly industrial product. The factory in Florida where the bulk of Coke’s orange juice products are made sounds less like a bucolic grove where natural things grow than an oil refinery where natural things go to die. And yes, that includes the “Grove Made” variety.

OH, god. I bought in bulk and have 3 of these in my fridge. Now I want to throw them away but my cheap side won’t let me. Nooooo

I love high pulp OJ. This is the only brand I can buy that is high pulp at the store so I’m going to keep buying it. Did anyone actually think that they made this any differently than other OJ? I was never disillusioned to believe that this was somehow made differently than anything else I could buy.

I don’t buy OJ often, because I grew up in Florida but live in Seattle, and it’s just not the same. But this stuff definitely tastes more like the juice I can buy in the groves near my parents’ house than anything else I can find around here. Which doesn’t mean it holds a candle to it, but sometimes I need some as an ingredient. *le sigh*

There’s not a lot I miss about Florida, but buying juice at the grove qualifies. (Along with a warm ocean and thunderstorms.)

See, what’s going on here is faulty deduction.

Fact: Many highly processed foods are not nutritionally sound; they contain carcinogenic chemicals, or those that damage one’s metabolism, digestive system, or circulatory system. (See also MSG, hydrogenated fats, bromenated oils, etc)

Fact: This food is highly processed.

False conclusion: This food must be very bad for you!

Let me just translate the following things out of SCARYSPEAK:

“Built into the model is a breakdown of the 600-plus flavors that are in orange juice that are tweaked throughout the year to keep flavor consistent and in line with consumer tastes”

They did a chemical analysis of a natural product to see what’s in it. For science. They then used the data to find out which chemicals in which combinations resulted in which flavors, and tried to replicate that as consistently as possible by pulling the product into its constituent parts and putting it back together in optimal ratios. We’ve been doing this shit with milk since…ever.

So…canning, then? You’re describing canning. Like the kind your kindly old grandma used to do with a great big steamy cauldron pot on the stove to make delicious wholesome home made jam. It’s the same ‘Disinfect and remove oxygen to prolong shelf life by reducing bacteria and preventing oxidation’ process.

” Doug Bippert, Coke’s vice president of business acceleration, calls it “a flight simulator for [Coke’s] juice business.” (Funnily enough Delta uses the same algorithm to balance its books.) “If we have a hurricane or a freeze,” Bippert added, “we can quickly replan the business in 5 or 10 minutes just because we’ve mathematically modeled it.” We call it deceitfully industrial, especially for a product called Simply Orange.”

THEY USED MATH AND SCIENCE, WHICH AS WE KNOW ARE EVIL.

I mean, I guess the argument that’s worth having here is what the meaning of the word ‘natural’ means in current usage - which is, essentially, NOTHING. But come the fuck ON, consumers are not naive lambs who think that because the juice they’re buying on a supermarket shelf says ‘natural’ that it was squeezed by hand into the bottle by a farmer down the street. Especially not those shopping in a supermarket hundreds or thousands of miles from where oranges can be grown.

“In conclusion, if you want that freshly squeezed orange juice experience, buy a juicer.”

Probably the only line in the document that’s not spun bullshit. But here’s the thing: even if I got a juicer? Where the fuck am I going to get fresh oranges? I live in Rhode Island. The bottling plant in Florida is getting better-quality produce than I am because it can be picked at peak ripeness and instantly processed, rather and being picked green, gassed with ethelene to ‘ripen’ it, shipped halfway across the country, and sat on a store shelf - all the while metabolizing its own sugars into less palatable starches and acids because every second it’s off the tree is a second in which it is dying and rotting.

Industrialization of the food process isn’t the evil part of the ‘what is wrong with our current farm systems’ equation. A small, local farm is probably my best bet for tomatoes and strawberries and airy products. Citrus fruit and its products? That shit’s not around here. Shipping it in a shelf-stable form from the place it’s from is a better bet for me. If I’m going to have it at all.

Because remember, back in the 40’s people in New England and even as far south as New York and Washington gave one another oranges AS CHRISTMAS GIFTS because they were such a rare treat. When you pine for a unilateral return to pastoral arcadias of tiny local farms, you gain locality and seasonality of produce but you lose diversity.

Good luck getting your fair trade organic hand-roasted small batch artisinal single-source Guatemalan coffee without industrialization, terrorhippies.

The truth in Kanye’s anti-prison rap

The backdrop to Kanye West’s “Saturday Night Live” performance was a lie. Projected behind the rapper, as he let loose with two rage-filled and politically fueled tracks, were the words “Not For Sale.”

Yeezy wouldn’t have graced the set if he wasn’t hawking a soon-to-be released LP. But his incendiary performance was peppered with damning truths: Angry and pointed condemnations of institutional racism and the prison industrial complex, which disproportionately jails young men of color to fill state budget holes and enrich private corporations.

In the final verse of “New Slaves,” a track released Friday with the coordinated projection of a video on 66 buildings worldwide, and the second performance in his “SNL” set, West raps:

Meanwhile the DEA
Teamed up with the CCA
They tryn’a lock niggas up
They tryn’a make new slaves
See that’s that private owned prison

Condensed and reduced to flow in rhyming verse, West’s lyrics smack of the conspiratorial. But he is correct: The War on Drugs, abetted by and fueling the private prison industry, currently serves to incarcerate hundreds of thousands of black men in the United States, who provide dirt-cheap labor. Various industries — from call centers to weapons manufacturers to retail companies — rely on prison labor. Private prisons pay inmate workers as little as 25 cents an hour; prisoners who refuse to work are regularly held in isolation. These are the de facto “new slaves” of the prison industrial complex. The CCA (the Corrections Corp of America) is one of two major private prison corporations (along with the GEO Group) that share in a market worth $70 billion.

And West’s implication that the CCA and the DEA are “tryn’a” lock up black people, leaving racist intentionality aside, is supported by troubling statistics. While the entire U.S. population is only 13.6 percent black, 40 percent of its vast prison population (over 2.5 million) is black. In 2010, black males were incarcerated at the rate of 4,347 inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents of the same race and gender, compared to 678 inmates per 100,000 for white males. The disparities are striking, especially when the majority of those held in U.S. prisons are guilty of minor drug offenses. This brings us to Kanye’s reference to the DEA.

As attorney and author John W. Whitehead pointed out in a HuffPo comment piece last year, states specifically opted to make sentencing laws for minor drug offenses harsh in order to fill private prisons — prisons which promised to fill gaping holes in state budgets:

[W]ith an eye toward increasing its bottom line, CCA has floated a proposal to prison officials in 48 states offering to buy and manage public prisons at a substantial cost savings to the states. In exchange, and here’s the kicker, the prisons would have to contain at least 1,000 beds and states would have agree to maintain a 90 percent occupancy rate in the privately run prisons for at least 20 years. The problem with this scenario, as Roger Werholtz, former Kansas secretary of corrections, recognizes is that while states may be tempted by the quick infusion of cash, they “would be obligated to maintain these (occupancy) rates and subtle pressure would be applied to make sentencing laws more severe with a clear intent to drive up the population.” Unfortunately, that’s exactly what has happened. Among the laws aimed at increasing the prison population and growing the profit margins of special interest corporations like CCA are three-strike laws (mandating sentences of 25 years to life for multiple felony convictions) and “truth-in-sentencing” legislation (mandating that those sentenced to prison serve most or all of their time).

As has been well-documented, young black men are disproportionately targeted by police for marijuana arrests. In New York City, for example, nearly 90 percent of the people arrested for marijuana possession are blacks and Latinos. The logic is simple: If states rely on minor drug arrests to fill privately run prisons, and young black men are targeted in minor drug arrests, then states rely on young black men to fill private prisons.

Or, as Yeezy put it: “See that’s that private owned prison/Get your piece today.”

Black Man to Lose Scholarship For Refusing Racist Assignment

Timothy McNair is a graduate student of opera at Northwestern University’s famed Bienen School of Music. McNair is at the school on a full scholarship, but the 25-year-old is standing up to his school after his professor, Donald Nally, gave him an assignment to perform a song created by a racist American poet named Walt Whitman. McNair asked his instructor if he could be assigned to perform the work of other artists but Nally denied him the opportunity and told him if he didn’t turn in all of his completed work by Friday, May 17th he’d receive a failing grade. McNair refused.

“Certainly I do not deserve to fail this class. I have a 3.7 GPA. I’m an officer on three committees of this university. So what is deserving for me? Is to be able to perform two pieces and have the third piece removed because of the insensitivity,” McNair told Chicago’s WGN news station. Although the piece McNair is instructed to perform does not contain any blatant racism, McNair believes it is still offensive that he was asked to complete the works of a devout racist. “We know (he) was historically racist. He’s called African Americans ‘baboons’ and was for oppressing voting rights,” McNair said of Whitman.

There are far too many instances when African-Americans at predominantly White institutions are expected to compromise their integrity to fit into the mold of the institution. Just last month students, community leaders, and alumni of Temple University challenged Dean Teresa Soufas for decisions she made regarding the school’s prestigious African-American studies program. Protestors believed she was attempting to diminish its profound reputation. Black Blue Dog readers called and emailed Soufas and voiced their concerns. Less than a week later, she finally made the decision to listen to the concerns of the protestors and complied. This week we must contact Richard Ashley, the chair of Bienen School of Music, and let him know about Nally’s insensitivity towards Black history. McNair should not be forced to lose his scholarship for respecting Black history.

Let Ashley know that Nally may not see the value in Black history, but we stand in solidarity with McNair in asking that he receives a replacement assignment that does not insult his integrity as an African-American man.
