BROSIE Goes Viral
I recently received an email from an anonymous fan sharing how she pulled a Hawkeye Initiative themed prank on her CEO to illustrate a problem with some artwork.
My personal compliments to her and her accomplice on a mission well done;…
This is one of the most incredible things I have ever read! Well done to the originator of the prank who, by the way, HAS A FREAKING AWESOME JOB.
I deal with shit like this all the time at work, but I have come to learn that people are willing and eager to learn, and to hear my point of view. A lot of our old guard customers, men who have been reading comics since WELL before I was born, have realized by listening to my explanations that a lot of what happens to women in comics, and the way they are portrayed, is not okay. It makes me feel unsafe, and that upsets them. I am big, I am solid and I am aggressive, so when I say something scares me, they listen.
It’s easy to get mad, it’s hard to explain a different side of things to someone twice my age, who knows more about my job than I do. But when someone is joking about the rape of female superheroes, getting to the point where they tearfully apologize…that’s progress, kids, and that’s satisfying. By the way, that dude now calls every hour when I close by myself to make sure I’m okay, because he understands why I sometimes feel unsafe in a male-dominated community. And that makes me feel safe :)
